How to Format Text on LinkedIn

LinkedIn does not natively support text formatting in posts and profiles. Our tool uses Unicode characters that look like formatted text.

  1. Type or paste your text in the editor
  2. Choose a style from the toolbar (Bold, Italic, Underline...) or from the style grid below
  3. Preview your post in the LinkedIn mockup on the right
  4. Copy the formatted text and paste it into LinkedIn

It works in posts, comments, headlines, About sections, and messages.

Why Format Your LinkedIn Posts?

Formatted text helps your LinkedIn posts stand out in a crowded feed.

  • Catch attention - Bold and italic text draws eyes to your key messages
  • Improve readability - Structure your content with visual hierarchy
  • Increase dwell time - Readable posts keep users engaged longer, which signals value to LinkedIn's algorithm
  • Stand out - Most users post plain text, formatting sets you apart

Important: Keep your main keywords in plain text so LinkedIn can index them. Use formatting for emphasis only, not for entire paragraphs.

LinkedIn Character Limits

  • LinkedIn headline: 220 characters

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I format text on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn does not have built-in formatting options. Use our LinkedIn Text Formatter to convert your text into Unicode characters that display as bold, italic, underline, and more. Type your text, select a style, copy the result, and paste it into LinkedIn.

Is the LinkedIn Text Formatter free?

Yes, completely. No sign-up, no limits, no hidden fees. Use it as much as you want.

Will formatted text work on all devices?

Unicode characters are widely supported on modern devices and browsers. However, some older devices or screen readers may not display them correctly. Bold and italic styles have the best compatibility.

Is formatted text searchable on LinkedIn?

No. Unicode formatted text is not indexed by LinkedIn search. Use formatting sparingly for emphasis, not for keywords you want to be found for. Keep important keywords in plain text.

What Unicode styles are supported?

Our formatter supports 17 styles: Bold, Italic, Bold Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Sans, Sans Bold, Sans Italic, Sans Bold Italic, Monospace, Script, Script Bold, Fraktur, Double Struck, Circled, Squared, and Fullwidth.

Can I use bold and italic in LinkedIn messages?

Yes. Unicode formatted text works in LinkedIn messages, connection requests, and InMails, not just posts. Copy the formatted text from our tool and paste it directly into any LinkedIn text field.

How do I make bold text on LinkedIn without a tool?

You cannot. LinkedIn does not support native text formatting in posts, comments, or messages. The only way to add bold, italic, or other styles is to use Unicode characters, which is exactly what our LinkedIn Text Formatter does automatically for you.

Does formatted text affect LinkedIn algorithm or reach?

Unicode-formatted text is not indexed by LinkedIn search. This means keywords in bold or italic will not help you appear in search results. Use formatting sparingly for visual emphasis, but always keep your important keywords in plain text. The formatting itself does not reduce reach, but replacing searchable keywords with Unicode characters can hurt your discoverability.

Can I format my LinkedIn headline or profile summary?

Since August 2024, LinkedIn no longer supports Unicode styled text in headlines. However, Unicode formatting still works in your About section, experience descriptions, posts, comments, and messages. Use it in these areas to make your profile stand out to recruiters and prospects.

What is the best text style for LinkedIn posts?

Bold (Serif Bold) and Sans Bold are the most widely used and have the best compatibility across devices. Use bold for headlines and key points, italic for emphasis or quotes. Avoid decorative styles like Script or Fraktur for body text as they can be hard to read on mobile.
