What is Boolean Search on LinkedIn?

Boolean search is a method of combining keywords with operators like AND, OR, and NOT to produce more relevant search results on LinkedIn. Instead of searching for a single term and scrolling through hundreds of irrelevant profiles, Boolean search lets you define exactly who you want to find.

For example, searching for "Sales Manager" AND "SaaS" will only return profiles that contain both terms. This is dramatically more efficient than a basic keyword search, especially when you are prospecting on LinkedIn or sourcing candidates.

Boolean search works across multiple LinkedIn products:

  • LinkedIn Search (free) - Works in the main search bar with some limitations
  • Sales Navigator - Supports Boolean in the Job Title, Company, and Keywords fields
  • LinkedIn Recruiter - Full Boolean support with the broadest character limits

Our free Boolean Search Builder generates the correct syntax automatically, so you don't need to memorize the rules. Just add your conditions, pick operators, and copy the result.

Boolean Operators Explained

LinkedIn Boolean search uses five core elements to build precise queries. Click each operator to learn how it works.

AND - Combine terms

Both terms must appear in the profile. Example: "Product Manager" AND "SaaS" finds Product Managers who work in SaaS. Use AND to narrow your results when you need profiles matching multiple criteria.

OR - Include alternatives

At least one of the terms must appear. Example: "CEO" OR "Founder" OR "Co-Founder" finds any of these titles. Use OR to broaden your search with synonyms or similar job titles.

NOT - Exclude terms

Excludes profiles containing the term. Example: "Developer" NOT "Junior" removes junior developers from results. Essential for filtering out irrelevant profiles from your search.

Quotes ("") - Exact phrases

Searches for an exact phrase. Without quotes, LinkedIn may search for each word separately. Example: "Sales Manager" finds exactly that title, while Sales Manager without quotes might return any profile mentioning "Sales" or "Manager" separately.

Parentheses () - Group logic

Groups terms together to control logic. Example: ("VP Sales" OR "Head of Sales") AND "SaaS" ensures the OR applies only to job titles, not to the industry term. The most common mistake is forgetting parentheses. Without them, "VP Sales" OR "Head of Sales" AND "SaaS" would only require SaaS for "Head of Sales" but not for "VP Sales". Our builder adds parentheses automatically.

LinkedIn Search vs Sales Navigator for Boolean

LinkedIn Search (Free)

Is this LinkedIn Boolean Search Builder free?

Yes, completely. No sign-up, no account, no limits on the number of queries you can generate. The tool runs entirely in your browser.

What Boolean operators does LinkedIn support?

LinkedIn supports AND (both terms required), OR (either term), NOT (exclude a term), quotation marks for exact phrases, and parentheses for grouping. These work in LinkedIn Search, Sales Navigator, and Recruiter, with slight differences in where you can apply them.

Can I use Boolean search in Sales Navigator?

Yes, but not in the main search bar. In Sales Navigator, Boolean search works in the Title, Company, and Keywords filter fields. Type your Boolean string directly into these fields. The character limit is approximately 400 characters per field.

What is the difference between AND and OR in Boolean search?

AND requires both conditions to be true: "Sales Manager" AND "SaaS" only returns profiles with both terms. OR requires at least one: "CEO" OR "Founder" returns profiles with either title. Use AND to narrow results and OR to broaden them.

Why should I use parentheses in Boolean search?

Parentheses control the order of operations, just like in math. Without them, "CEO" OR "CTO" AND "SaaS" could be interpreted as finding all CEOs plus only CTOs in SaaS. With parentheses: ("CEO" OR "CTO") AND "SaaS" correctly requires SaaS for both titles. Our builder adds parentheses automatically.

How many characters can a Boolean search string have on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn does not publish official character limits, but based on testing: LinkedIn free search handles long strings well, Sales Navigator fields accept approximately 400 characters, and LinkedIn Recruiter supports over 1,000 characters per field. Our builder includes a character counter with warnings when you approach the limit for your selected platform.

Can I save my Boolean search queries?

Yes. The builder automatically saves your current query and keeps a history of your last 5 queries in your browser (localStorage). Click any previous query to restore it. No account needed.

How does this tool compare to manually writing Boolean strings?

Our builder eliminates syntax errors (mismatched parentheses, missing quotes, wrong operator placement) that are common when writing Boolean strings manually. It also provides visual feedback with syntax highlighting, character counting, and ready-to-use templates. The result is identical to a manually written string, but generated faster and without errors.
