What is Boolean Search on LinkedIn?
Boolean search is a method of combining keywords with operators like AND, OR, and NOT to produce more relevant search results on LinkedIn. Instead of searching for a single term and scrolling through hundreds of irrelevant profiles, Boolean search lets you define exactly who you want to find.
For example, searching for "Sales Manager" AND "SaaS" will only return profiles that contain both terms. This is dramatically more efficient than a basic keyword search, especially when you are prospecting on LinkedIn or sourcing candidates.
Boolean search works across multiple LinkedIn products:
- LinkedIn Search (free) - Works in the main search bar with some limitations
- Sales Navigator - Supports Boolean in the Job Title, Company, and Keywords fields
- LinkedIn Recruiter - Full Boolean support with the broadest character limits
Our free Boolean Search Builder generates the correct syntax automatically, so you don't need to memorize the rules. Just add your conditions, pick operators, and copy the result.
Boolean Operators Explained
LinkedIn Boolean search uses five core elements to build precise queries. Click each operator to learn how it works.
AND - Combine terms
"Product Manager" AND "SaaS" finds Product Managers who work in SaaS. Use AND to narrow your results when you need profiles matching multiple criteria.OR - Include alternatives
"CEO" OR "Founder" OR "Co-Founder" finds any of these titles. Use OR to broaden your search with synonyms or similar job titles.NOT - Exclude terms
"Developer" NOT "Junior" removes junior developers from results. Essential for filtering out irrelevant profiles from your search.Quotes ("") - Exact phrases
"Sales Manager" finds exactly that title, while Sales Manager without quotes might return any profile mentioning "Sales" or "Manager" separately.Parentheses () - Group logic
("VP Sales" OR "Head of Sales") AND "SaaS" ensures the OR applies only to job titles, not to the industry term. The most common mistake is forgetting parentheses. Without them, "VP Sales" OR "Head of Sales" AND "SaaS" would only require SaaS for "Head of Sales" but not for "VP Sales". Our builder adds parentheses automatically.Ready to put your Boolean searches to work?

What Boolean operators does LinkedIn support?
Can I use Boolean search in Sales Navigator?
What is the difference between AND and OR in Boolean search?
"Sales Manager" AND "SaaS" only returns profiles with both terms. OR requires at least one: "CEO" OR "Founder" returns profiles with either title. Use AND to narrow results and OR to broaden them. Why should I use parentheses in Boolean search?
"CEO" OR "CTO" AND "SaaS" could be interpreted as finding all CEOs plus only CTOs in SaaS. With parentheses: ("CEO" OR "CTO") AND "SaaS" correctly requires SaaS for both titles. Our builder adds parentheses automatically. How many characters can a Boolean search string have on LinkedIn?
